Aldose Reductase ispurified from the culture medium containing baculovirus-insect cellline 32d gene expression system. cDNA containing the entire proteincoding region is expressed, and the enzyme exhibits the sameproperties and characteristics of human muscle andretina.
AldoseReductase catalyzes the reduction of glucose tosorbitol.
Sorbitol issubsequently converted to fructose by sorbitoldehydrogenase.
These two enzymesare key components of the polyol pathway, the alternate route ofglucose metabolism. It is suggested that aldosereductase is involved in the pathogenesis of diabetic
complications andthe inhibitors continue to be developed at a vigorouspace.
